Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers

Hi,

During the first tutorial lesson, my group was tasked to share our personal opinion on a statement.

“Communication skills are an essential component in the education of
engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.”Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007)

To me, communication skills are one of the most important components for all humans. Not only for education and definitely not just for engineers. Communication skills can be shown in different levels and it can be as simple as saying a "good morning" to someone.

Saying "good morning" to someone shows that you're ready to welcome them or just simply wishes them to have an enjoyable morning.

Therefore, engineers are also humans. They will need strong communication skills during their education period and during their working phase, basically everywhere they go they will need it. For example, a field service engineer in the biomedical engineering industry. Their job scope is just to do preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and projects.

However, during these periods customers/users may question the engineers the reasons behind conducting monthly maintenance, since there are no obvious fault in the equipment.

Most of the time, users are not trained to understand their machines' hardware and software. They are trained only on how to operate their machines. Therefore, the profession of engineers who have the utmost knowledge of the machines will take charge in explaining the reason for maintenance to the consumers.

We can't possibly say that we don't want to explain the reasons for maintenance to our customers right ?

they can also find someone else that willing to explain it to them right ?

To conclude, I feel that everyone can be an engineer, but what separates a good and a mediocre engineer is his/her ability to communicate effectively to people.

  1. Hello Chek Eu, Yuan Kai here. This blog was written in a very informal way but it's alright as i am able to understand the message you are trying to get across. My grammar is not very good but i will try my best to help. These are some grammar mistakes i would like to highlight:

    1) "During the first tutorial lesson, my group were task to share our personal opinion on a statement." I believe it should be 'was tasked' instead of 'were task'.

    2) "To me communication skills are one of the most important component for all humans."
I believe there should be a comma after 'To me' and also 'component' should be 'components'.

    3) "Communication skills shown in different levels, it can be as simple as saying a "Good morning" to someone." I believe 'Communication skills shown' should be 'Communication skills can be shown' and maybe replace the comma after that with an 'and'. Moreover, the 'Good morning' should be 'good morning'.

    4) "Saying "Good Morning" to someone shows that you're ready to welcome them or just simply wishes them to have a enjoyable morning." I believe 'Good Morning' should be 'good morning'. Also, 'a enjoyable' should be 'an enjoyable'.

    5) "Therefore, Engineers are also humans." 'Engineers' should be 'engineers'.

    6) "They will need strong communication skills during their education period and during their working phase, basically everywhere they go they will need it." I think we can leave out the second 'during' and maybe the whole 'basically everywhere they go they will need it'.

    7) "Their job scope is just to do preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and projects." I believe the 'just to' should be 'to just'.

    8) "However, during these period of time there will always be customers/users that will question the engineers why is there a need to do monthly maintenance. "is there really a need to do so, since the equipment is still working?"" I would change the sentence to 'However, during these periods, customers/users may question the engineers the reasons behind conducting monthly maintenance since there are no obvious fault in the equipment'.

    9) "Most of the time the users are not training to understand the machines hardware or software. they're training to operate the machines only. Therefore, Engineer being the one person with the knowledge of the machines have to explain to their customers." These can be changed to 'Most of the time, users are not trained to understand their machines' hardware and software. They are trained only on how to operate their machines. Therefore, engineers are the person with the knowledge of the machines and it is necessary for them to be able to explain to the users/customers."

    10) "To conclude, I personally feel that everyone can be a Engineer, but what makes a engineer better than another. one of the Key component is definitely communication skills." I will write it as 'To conclude, I feel that everyone can be an engineer, but what separates a good and a mediocre engineer is his/her ability to communicate effectively to people.

I am not confident in my own corrections so may need your help to check through one more time. Also, it would be better if someone else could assists me in this. Sorry, my English standard is not high. (T..T)
